Agricola is good fun. Been playing it with some friends over the past few months. It's like farming without the early mornings!
This conversation is quite persistent, eh...

Be very careful with Carcasonne if you have young children. They might be adversely affected by too much exposure. Many people think that Eugène Viollet-le-Duc 19th century restoration was flawed, especially the shape of the roofs, which are more like those of the Loire than the south of France. It was the scene of a horrific slaughter of the Cathars by Simone the Monfort in the 13th century. The best view of it is from the Autoroute du Sud. Most of the year it's overrun by parties of French and Spanish school children and it specializes in cheap souvenirs.
I got Spore for Christmas. I always choose to be a carnivore. None of this nicey-nicey stuff, Fonz.

Personally, I have had a very difficult time in getting to love Carcasonne. My best friend loves it for some reason, but until he agrees to love Diplomacy, I can continue putting him off on Carcasonne.

One of my other favorites is Acquire. I haven't lost that one since I was a kid playing against the TRS-80. Now I have a hard time finding fresh meat. The logic is as good as Diplomacy, but I get to manipulate the money scene in this one.

As I said, basically Carcasonne is not lovable. Sure, it looks good from the aire on the autoroute, but the approach to the castle is through a pretty squalid industrial zone and the parking isn't all that easy either. Still, it's only a day trip if you're staying in Toulouse and the cassoulet in the region is excellent.
If you're having trouble finding fresh meat, tempt him with this cassoulet recipe. He'll play any game you want, (though maybe not Carcasonne,)

I've always wanted to try that cassoulet. How long does it take to play?
